The 34th annual “China Symposium 2008” will be held at the University of Chicago’s International House, 1414 E. 59th Street, on Saturday, Jan. 26.
President Robert J. Zimmer will make introductory remarks at the event, which is co-hosted by thethe University’s Center for East Asian Studies, International House, and the Chicago Chapter of the U.S.-China Peoples Friendship Association.
The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Sun Zhe of Tsinghua University in Beijing. A professor at Tsinghua’s Institute for International Studies and director of its center for U.S.-China Relations, Zhe is the author of 18 books on politics and U.S.-China relations. His speech, “New Partnership Paradoxes in U.S.-China Relations,” will focus on several issues, including trade issues between the U.S. and China, the Chinese model of development, and whether a Chinese form of democracy is possible. He’ll also discuss misperceptions regarding Taiwan’s relationship with the U.S. and China
The symposium will begin with a history program at 9:30 a.m. followed by presentations on wide-range of subjects, including Chinese art, philosophy, commerce, and science, from noon to 5:45 p.m. The cost to attend is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
