What/Who: 2008 Chicago Conference on China's Economic Transformation Program

Renowned economist Ronald Coase, the Clifton R. Musser Professor Emeritus in the University of Chicago Law School, will be the host. Coase will deliver opening remarks on Monday and closing remarks on Friday. The conference will welcome Chinese entrepreneurs and government officials, who are recognized as agents of change, to provide insight into the transformation of the country's economic climate.

Background:
The first three days of the conference will include several sessions of thematic panels, presentations and discussions. Session topics will include: "China's Economic Transformation in Retrospective," "The Role of Non-State Sectors in China's Economic Transformation," "China Opens Up: Foreign Capital, Markets and Ideas," "The Chinese Legal System: Law and Economic Development," and "Government Policy and China's Economic Transformation."

The final two days of the conference will revolve around short presentations from Chinese government officials and entrepreneurs, who will give detailed insights and reflections on their experiences and struggles in China's economic transformation.

The 97-year-old Coase is sometimes referred to as the father of policy reform for the allocation of the radio frequency spectrum because of his 1959 article, "The Federal Communications Commission." He spent the majority of his academic career at the University of Chicago's Law School and won the 1991 Nobel Prize in Economics for his influential and best-known essays, "The Nature of the Firm" (1937) and "The Problem of Social Cost" (1960).
