Traffic will be detoured off a stretch of 55th Street near the University of Chicago through at least Oct. 21, due to a construction project to remove an old rail overpass.
Eastbound 55th Street (Garfield Boulevard) between the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94) and State Street will be closed through Oct. 11, according to Rodney Morris, senior director of Public Safety & Security, Facilities and Parking at the Medical Center. Traffic is being rerouted to 51st Street and then routed back to 55th; long delays can be expected during peak travel hours.
Beginning Oct. 12 through Oct. 21, the westbound stretch of 55th Street from I-94 to State Street will be closed for the same project, and traffic will again be diverted.
