The Chief Economist of the World Bank, Justin Yifu Lin, is scheduled to visit campus next month to discuss the future of the Chinese economy.
Lin, who received a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago in 1986, will deliver the keynote address for the Saturday, May 15 conference, "China and the Future of the Global Economy."
Other leading academic experts, policy-makers, and business leaders attending the conference include Nobel laureate Robert Fogel, the Charles R. Walgreen Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at the Chicago Booth School of Business.
The conference also will explore three other major themes related to the Chinese economy: "Global Impacts of China's Economic Growth and Long-term Strategy," "China's Green Revolution: Solutions and Challenges," and "Evolution of China's inancial Markets."
Hosted by the student-run Chicago Society, and co-hosted by two other student organizations, Culture and Career Club and Moneythink, the conference is intended to enhance a broader understanding of modern-day China, especially its rapid social, economic, and political transformations and its role in the post-crisis global economy. Despite the global financial crisis, the Chinese economy continues to prosper.
The conference participants will examine the reasons for this growth, as well as its consequences, including the need to bring greenhouse gas emissions under control and expand the country's banking system.
