The Chicago Fire Department extinguished a fire Tuesday night at the Statistics and Mathematics building, located at 5727 S. University Ave.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries from falling debris in the building, and was treated and released from the University of Chicago Medical Center, said medical center spokesman John Easton.
The location of the fire, also called the MathStat building, has most recently been under construction and was not occupied by faculty, staff or students at the time.
Several private residences and office buildings immediately adjacent to the fire were evacuated as a precaution because of high winds in the area, but the fire did not affect any other structures. The shuttle bus hub normally located at 57th St. and University Ave. was temporarily moved to 57th St. and Ellis Ave., said Marlon C. Lynch, Associate Vice President for Safety and Security.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Chicago Fire Department.
