Dennis Carlton will return to the faculty of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business on July 1 after having served in Washington, DC, as deputy assistant attorney general for the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division.He was on academic leave while performing government service.
During the 2008-09 academic year Carlton will teach a course in antitrust and industrial organization, and two courses in microeconomics at Chicago GSB.
Carlton was named the Katherine Dusak Miller Professor of Economics at the school effective upon his return.Previously he was a professor of economics.
While at the Department of Justice, Carlton oversaw the analysis of economic issues arising in both merger and non-merger enforcement.He consulted regularly with antitrust regulators from around the world in their development of competition regulations and guidelines.
Carlton focuses his academic research on theoretical and applied microeconomics, and industrial organization.
He is co-editor of the Journal of Law and Economics and co-editor of Competition Policy International.In addition to co-authoring the book Modern Industrial Organization (with Jeffrey Perloff), Carlton has authored over 90 articles on a wide variety of topics.
His professional affiliations include serving as a member of the economic consulting team for Compass Lexecon, a unit of FTI Consulting.
Carlton joined the Chicago GSB faculty in 1984.Previously he was a professor of economics at the University of Chicago Law School and an associate professor in the University's Department of Economics.
