UChicago to celebrate its 125th anniversary with affiliated laboratories Nov. 13

The University of Chicago helps lead the country in scientific and technological innovation, in part through its management of two U.S. Department of Energy laboratories—Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory—and its affiliation with the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass.

In honor of the University’s 125th anniversary, the University and its affiliated laboratories will host a program featuring a panel discussion relating to the history and future of these collaborations, including current scientific partnerships and discoveries on the horizon. The event will take place on Friday, Nov. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the William Eckhardt Research Center, 5640 S. Ellis Ave.

The program will include remarks by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and President Robert J. Zimmer, as well as a conversation between Provost Eric Isaacs, who served as director of Argonne from 2009 to 2014, and School of the Art Institute of Chicago President Walter Massey, a Trustee Emeritus of the University as well as a member of the boards of both Argonne and MBL. Massey served as Argonne’s director from 1979 to 1984. Isaacs will also lead a panel discussion with Peter B. Littlewood, director of Argonne; Nigel Lockyer, director of Fermilab; and Huntington Willard, president and director of the MBL.

In the last half of the program, Matthew Tirrell, dean and founding Pritzker Director of UChicago’s Institute for Molecular Engineering and Argonne’s deputy director for science, will give remarks and introduce short talks about groundbreaking research. They will be given by Marcela Carena, director of international relations and head of theoretical physics at Fermilab; Leah Guzowski, director of strategy and research programs and energy policy scientist at Argonne, and fellow of the Computation Institute; Julie Huber, MBL associate scientist and associate director of the Josephine Bay Paul Center; and Melody Swartz, the William B. Ogden Professor in Molecular Engineering at UChicago.

The program will be webcast. Members of the public and campus community are invited to join the live event or at viewing parties that will be held in the first-floor atrium and fifth-floor Astro Lounge of the Eckhardt Research Center. Seating is limited.

The Marine Biological Laboratory will hold a livestream viewing party from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST at the Speck Auditorium, 10 MBL St., Woods Hole.
