Ray Pierrehumbert will serve the 2014–15 academic year as a King Carl XVI Gustaf Professor in Environmental Science at Stockholm University’s department of meteorology. Pierrehumbert, the Louis Block Professor in Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago, will be one of two environmental scientists who will be co-honored by the king of Sweden next year.
Pierrehumbert was a co-author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Third Assessment Report (1997–2001). The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was shared equally by the IPCC and Al Gore, Jr., “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.”
During his stay in Sweden, Pierrehumbert will devote his attention to carbon accumulation and feedback mechanisms between terrestrial systems and the atmosphere, socio-economic implications of climate change and climate policy, and will attempt to better understand the likelihood of disaster scenarios in different climate models.
