Prof. Stephen Stigler is a world-class expert on the history of statistics. His particular focus is the development of statistical methods in the natural and social sciences. He often comments on the odds of sports and lotteries. He established ‘Stigler’s law of eponymy,’ which states that no scientific discovery is named after its original discoverer.
A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and former president of both the International Statistical Institute and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Stigler has authored two books, The History of Statistics: The Measurement of Uncertainty before 1900 and Statistics on the Table: The History of Statistical Concepts and Methods, as well as numerous articles.
