New 53rd Street Shuttle expands campus connections

A new shuttle bus route links points around campus with the new multi-use Harper Court development and other businesses on 53rd Street. The 53rd Street Express Shuttle, which began service on Nov. 4, is free for all University students, faculty, staff and other academic personnel, as well as University of Chicago Medicine staff.

The shuttle will operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, except on University holidays. The shuttle’s route begins at Ellis Garage at 7 a.m. and travels counter-clockwise around campus. This shuttle will only pick up and drop off passengers at the designated stops along the route. The shuttle stops include:

  • Ellis Garage
  • Levi Hall
  • 60th Street/Ellis Avenue
  • Press Building
  • 57th Street/Stony Island Avenue
  • Harper Court
  • 53rd Street/Woodlawn Avenue

The shuttle will offer direct access from campus to Harper Court, which includes a hotel, new retail and dining options, and a 12-story office tower that will house more than 550 UChicago employees.

Transportation & Parking Services is piloting a new card reader system on the 53rd Street Express Shuttle to capture ridership data and verify University affiliation. The card readers are located just inside and to the right of the door. To use the shuttle, riders must tap their UChicago ID or University of Chicago Medicine ID on the card reader when boarding.
