Michele M. Schiele, a leader in development efforts at the University of Chicago Medical Center for nearly 14 years, has been appointed interim Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development at the University of Chicago, President Robert J. Zimmer announced.
The appointment is effective immediately.
Schiele is currently Vice President and Associate Dean for Development at the Medical Center. She will continue in that role during the interim period.
For the past two years, Schiele has held a concurrent appointment as Associate Vice President for University Development.
"Michele has served as a senior leader in university-wide alumni engagement and fundraising efforts, so she is well positioned to continue building our momentum in these areas," Zimmer said. "She and I share several immediate priorities, which include achieving this year's development goals, building support for key University initiatives and ensuring that plans, organization and resources for the future are in place."
At the Medical Center Schiele spearheaded two major fundraising campaigns that exceeded their goals - the Campaign for Childrenraised $71 million against a goal of $50 million, and $810 million was raised against a goal of $550 million through Spark Discovery, Illuminate Life, a comprehensive capital campaign. At the same time, Schiele said she worked to develop a culture of philanthropy throughout the Medical Center community.
Zimmer said Schiele understands the importance of that work to the institution.
"Alumni and friends have played a key role in building the University community in recent years. Their generosity has helped advance our distinctive research and enhance the education we provide to students at all levels. Michele understands that crucial relationship and shares our ambitions for this University," Zimmer said.
Officials said they hope to conclude the vice presidential search later this year.
