Students, faculty members and staff are invited to celebrate the new Mansueto Library at an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26.
The event will be held on the lawn along 57th Street, outside the Mansueto and Regenstein libraries, and will feature audio tours and information about the new library. Patrons will have the opportunity to download the audio tour on a mobile device or borrow iPods supplied by the library.
There also will be free ice cream, cupcakes and other treats, as well as limited-edition, commemorative buttons based on architect Helmut Jahn’s initial sketches for the building.
All members of the UChicago community are welcome to attend the open house event. Entrance to the library will require a valid University ID card.
The Mansueto Library houses a high-density underground storage system with the capacity to hold 3.5 million volume equivalents, along with cutting-edge facilities for book conservation and digitization. The library is named for Joe Mansueto, AB’78 and MBA’80, and Rika Yoshida, AB’91, who gave a $25 million gift to the University in 2008. The library’s Grand Reading Room opened on May 16.
The Sept. 26 open house is intended as an informal celebration of the new library. An official dedication will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at the Harper Memorial Commons. That event will include a keynote address by Princeton history professor Anthony Grafton, AB’71, AM’72, PhD’75, and a commissioned piece of music by University Professor of Composition Augusta Read Thomas.
