The University of Chicago Board of Trustees has elected four new members: Rebecca Jarvis, AB’03; Yong-Mee “Michele” Kang, AB’83; Thomas “Tom” Ricketts, AB’88, MBA’93; and Steven “Steve” Wymer, MBA’89. They began their five-year terms in May 2024.
“Rebecca, Michele, Tom and Steve are experienced leaders who are committed to UChicago’s core values,” said David Rubenstein, JD’73, chair of the Board of Trustees. “The Board and University will benefit from the diversity of experience and thought embodied by this Trustee cohort.”
“I am thrilled to welcome this distinguished group of alumni to the Board, who are eager to deepen their engagement with the University,” said President Paul Alivisatos. “Rebecca, Michele, Tom and Steve join us at an inflection point for the University, and we are grateful for their continued partnership to advance the ambitions of the University of Chicago.”
Rebecca Jarvis is the chief business, technology and economics correspondent at ABC News. An Emmy Award-winning journalist, she is the creator and host of “The Dropout” podcast, chronicling the rise and fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Jarvis is also an executive producer on the Hulu series by the same name.
Before joining ABC News in 2013, Jarvis was an anchor with CBS News, a correspondent at CNBC, wrote for Crain’s Chicago Business, and was an analyst at Banc of America Securities.
Jarvis earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and law, letters & society from UChicago in 2003.
Y. Michele Kang is the founder and CEO of the first global multi-club women’s professional football group, which owns controlling interests in the Washington Spirit (U.S.), Olympique Lyonnais (France), and the London City Lionesses (England).
Previously, she founded and led Cognosante, a pioneering health IT company, and held senior positions at Northrop Grumman, Ernst & Young, Mercer, and Arthur D. Little.
She received a bachelor’s degree in economics from UChicago in 1983 and an MBA from Yale University in 1989.
Tom Ricketts is founder and chairman of Incapital LLC, an investment bank focused on the underwriting and distribution of fixed income products to investors. In 2021, Incapital merged with fintech startup 280 CapMarkets LLC to create InspereX. Ricketts continues to serve as InspereX’s chairman and largest owner. Ricketts is also the executive chairman of the Chicago Cubs, a position he has held since 2009 when the Ricketts family acquired the Major League Baseball team.
Ricketts earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1988 and an MBA in 1993, both from UChicago.
Steve Wymer is a portfolio manager in Fidelity Investments’ equity and high-income division.
Wymer joined Fidelity in 1989 and has served as a fund manager since 1990. He has managed the Fidelity Growth Company Fund and related funds since 1997. In 2017, Morningstar named Wymer “Domestic-Stock Fund Manager of the Year.”
He received a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1985 and an MBA from UChicago in 1989.
