City enacts parking ban on Midway streets for July 15 memorial service

On Thursday, July 15, Rockefeller Memorial Chapel will host a memorial service for Thor Soderberg, a Chicago Police officer killed last week in the line of duty. Thousands of police officers and other mourners from around the region are expected to attend.

In order to accommodate the large crowd for the service, the city will ban regular parking on Thursday, July 15 along both sides of the Midway Plaisance, 59th Street and 60th Street, from the Metra tracks on the east to Ellis Avenue on the west. A map of the restricted area can be found here.

The parking ban will begin at 7 a.m. Thursday. The city will remove vehicles still parked in the restricted area at that time and relocate them to a parking lot at the northeast corner of 61st Street and Woodlawn Avenue. There will be no fines or fees associated with the relocation, and owners may pick up their vehicles at the parking lot.

In order to help University affiliates who may be inconvenienced by the restriction, the University will open its parking garage at 55th Street and Ellis Avenue, free of charge, from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, until 6 a.m. on Friday, July 16. Car owners are advised to move their vehicles well in advance of the restriction to avoid problems. Because of the large crowds and traffic expected throughout the morning, University affiliates are advised to use mass transportation to reach campus on Thursday.

People whose cars are relocated because of the parking ban may call 773-702-8181 for more information.
