Archaeology camp will allow adults to dig into history

The Oriental Institute will host a hands-on archaeology experience for adults from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 13, using the Kipper Family Archaeology Discovery Center. Two field archaeologists will lead participants through the basics of archaeology, plus give them hands-on experience in excavating a simulated archaeological site.

Participants will learn about post-excavation work in the field, including recording of finds and reconstruction of artifacts. The program also will include a rare opportunity to visit the laboratories and research areas in which the Oriental Institute’s collections of ancient Near Eastern art and artifacts are housed, studied and prepared for museum exhibits.

A box lunch and all program activities and materials will be included, along with a field notebook to record discoveries. The program, which will be repeated Aug. 13, is intended for adults ages 18 and up; cost is $295 for OI members, $345 for non-members. Register at https://oi.uchicago.edu/order/classes/.
