Evelyn Brodkin

Evelyn Brodkin is a leading scholar on street-level organizations (SLOs), agencies that directly interface with the general public and are charged with implementing public policy. Her research has contributed to the development of this field of study, which explores welfare state politics, marginalization, inequality, political institutions, public policy, and management.

Brodkin currently leads an international collaboration focused on a street-level perspective of asylum politics, “The State at the Street: From European Welfare Crisis to the Front Lines of the Welfare State.” It uses field studies to investigate the organizational arrangements and practices that form the realities of asylum on the ground, particularly in states like Sweden and Denmark. The project is co-located at the University of Chicago, the University of Gothenburg, and Aalborg University.
