Subject:  Violence in our Nation’s Capital and the Transfer of Federal Power
Date:   January 6, 2021

We and many in our community watched with deep concern today as a violent group overran and occupied the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.

To many of us, this violence represents a disturbing undermining of fundamental institutions, civil discourse, and processes of law in the United States. At this time of division in our nation, it is critically important that our university continues to embrace the pursuit of truth, the power of engagement, and the thoughtful exchange of ideas.

Maintaining the safety and security of our community is a paramount priority. In addition to closely monitoring the situation in Washington, we are in contact with Chicago officials and will update the University community if these events or any related activities might have an impact in Chicago.

Through the relentless pursuit of knowledge and greater understanding, we will continue to address the many significant challenges that are facing our country and the world.
