University leadership recently received an open letter signed by many faculty members concerned about issues of privacy and students. A response to many of those concerns is noted here.

The University of Chicago remains steadfast in its commitment to free expression, open inquiry, and the well-being of all members of our community. These principles, as outlined in the Kalven Report and the Chicago Principles, guide our approach to maintaining an environment where robust debate and a diversity of thought and perspectives can thrive.

The University has clear policies in place that govern how we operate in these areas, including protections for student and employee information under FERPA. The University does not monitor or report on the activities of students, faculty, or staff based on immigration status, except as required by law. The University of Chicago Police Department does not engage in immigration enforcement work and does not release information on immigration status to law enforcement agencies unless legally required to do so.

Ongoing questions have been raised about recent federal actions and their potential impact on our research community. The University is actively engaged in scenario planning based on these developments and will communicate directly with affected individuals as more information becomes available.

As always, the University upholds academic freedom and free expression, aiming to ensure that campus remains a place where ideas can be debated openly.
