Scholars, scientists add new knowledge to Darwin's legacy at conference

Richard Lewontin, the Alexander Agassiz Research Professor at the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, opens the Darwin/Chicago 2009 conference with his talk “Genetic Determination and Adaptation: Two Bad Metaphors” at a plenary session in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.

The works of conference presenters at the Darwin/Chicago 2009 conference were displayed in the Cloister Club in Ida Noyes Hall, where attendees could browse the literature.

Neil Shubin, the Robert R. Bensley Distinguished Service Professor and Associate Dean of Organismal and Evolutionary Biology, describes the anatomy of the famous Tiktaalik roseae fossil to Thomas Schoener, Distinguished Professor of Biology at the University of California, Davis. Shubin and his team of researchers discovered the fossil in 2006 in the Canadian Arctic.

Hopi Hoekstra, the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and the curator of mammals in the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, presents her talk “What Darwin Did and Didn’t Know: the Ultimate and Proximate Causes of Evolutionary Change,” in the Max Palevsky Cinema.
