Robert Fefferman served as dean of the Physical Sciences Division from 2003 until 2013, and as chairman of the mathematics department from 1995 to 2001. Within mathematics, Fefferman is an expert in harmonic analysis, its applications to elliptic partial differential equations and its relationship to probability theory. He is a co-founder of modern multi-parameter Fourier analysis and has lectured around the world on his work. A fellow of the Sloan Foundation, in 2009 he was elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For more than 20 years, Fefferman has been active in mathematics outreach, working with Chicago Public School teachers to improve the quality of mathematics education for Chicago’s children. He has taught extensively in the mathematics department at all levels, and in 1982 was awarded the University’s Quantrell Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
