Persis Berlekamp studies Islamic art and architecture, with a research specialization in Arabic and Persian manuscripts of the late Abbasid and Mongol periods (13th to 15th centuries). She has focused particularly on the relationship between art history and intellectual history in the Ottoman Empire, the art of the book in Arab and Persian cultures, Islamic gardens, Timurid art and medieval Baghdad. Her current research interests include Neoplatonic cosmography and the imaging of natural history, alchemy and astrology; the application of medieval Islamic traditions of medical illustration to Chinese medicine; and how theoretical understandings of talismans relate to their visual forms.
