Yevgen Sautin, AM’15, has won a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a doctorate in modern Chinese history next year at the University of Cambridge. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential, as well as a commitment to improving the lives of others.

While enrolled at UChicago, Sautin earned a master’s degree from the Committee on International Relations and spent a year as a David L. Boren Fellow, pursuing advanced Chinese language study at the National University of Taiwan. Prior to that, he was a junior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., where he worked in the Russia-Eurasia and Energy and Climate programs and gained exposure to reconciliation and conflict resolution approaches.
At Cambridge, Sautin will focus on Manchuria in the early post-war period and hopes to apply his research to the realm of foreign policy. “Winning this scholarship is a tremendous honor,” Sautin said. “I firmly believe that there is a tangible way to make the world move in the right direction if you’re pursuing a career in policy—and that historians have a role in those debates and conversations.”
Sautin is the 21st UChicago student to receive a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.
