UHI-led community forum to discuss solutions for curbing youth violence

Experts from the University of Chicago and the Hyde Park community will gather Friday, Nov. 12 to discuss solutions to end youth violence from academic and community perspectives.

Dr. Doriane Miller, director of the Center for Community Health & Vitality, will discuss how the Urban Health Initiative is working with South Side communities to meet local health care needs and better understand how social and environmental factors affect health.

Torrey L. Barrett, executive director of the K.L.E.O. Community Faith Life Center, will moderate an interactive discussion following the panel presentation, which will include Dexter Voisin from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration, Marshaun Bacon from Youth Guidance Becoming A Man, LeVon Stone from Metropolitan Area Group for Igniting Civilization, Charles Richard from K.L.E.O., and Audtrie Mobley from Chicago Youth Programs.

What: “Becoming a Piece of the Peace,” a community forum that will discuss conflict resolution, anger management, gender issues, domestic disputes and ways to improve police relations in the community.

The event is funded by the National Institutes of Health through the University of Chicago’s Institute of Translational Medicine. It is held in collaboration with LISC/Chicago’s New Communities Program, Greater–Auburn–Gresham Development Corporation, Quad Communities Development Corporation, Teamwork Englewood, Claretian Associates, Washington Park Consortium, NCP Woodlawn, The Alliance for Research in Chicagoland Communities (ARCC) of Northwestern University and the Near North Health Service Corporation.
