Henrique Meirelles, Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil, will speak at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4 at Chicago Booth on the topic “Perspectives for the Brazilian Economy for the Next Few Years.”
Meirelles is Brazil's longest-serving central bank governor, a cabinet level position. Euromoney selected him as Central Bank Governor of the Year in 2007, and the Latin Trade group named him Financier of the Year in 2008.
Prior to this position, he was President of FleetBoston’s Corporate and Global Bank and of BankBoston Corporation. Meirelles joined BankBoston in 1974 and became its Brazilian President in 1984. He was later appointed President and COO of BankBoston Corporation in 1996, moving to Boston, Mass. He was named President of FleetBoston's Corporate and Global Bank in October 1999, following the merger of BankBoston and Fleet Financial Group.
The event, which will take place in Room C07 of the Charles M. Harper Center, is a Center for Latin American Studies Distinguished Lecture sponsored by CLAS, with co-sponsorship from the Latin American Business Group, Latin American Matters, the Brazilian Student Association and the Consulate General of Brazil in Chicago Trade and Investment Department.
