Student-led groups host World Bank economist Lin at conference on China’s growth

The Chief Economist of the World Bank, Justin Yifu Lin, delivered the keynote address at the Saturday, May 15 conference, "China and the Future of the Global Economy."

Lin, who received a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago in 1986, joined other leading academic experts, policy-makers, and business leaders attending the conference to discuss China's growth and impact on global financial markets.

The conference also explored three other major themes related to the Chinese economy: "Global Impacts of China's Economic Growth and Long-term Strategy," "China's Green Revolution: Solutions and Challenges," and "Evolution of China's Financial Markets."

Hosted by the student-run Chicago Society, and co-hosted by two other student organizations, Culture and Career Club and Moneythink, the conference was organized to enhance a broader understanding of modern-day China, especially its rapid social, economic, and political transformations and its role in the post-crisis global economy. Despite the global financial crisis, the Chinese economy continues to prosper.

The conference participants examined the reasons for this growth, as well as its consequences, including the need to bring greenhouse gas emissions under control and expand the country's banking system.
