Re: Ted Snyder
As he approaches the end of his second term as dean of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Ted Snyder has announced that he will conclude his active service as dean at the end of this academic year. We want to take this opportunity to express our deep gratitude to Ted for his dedication and achievements over nine years of outstanding service.
Ted’s vision for Chicago Booth has been, in his words, “to be the best business school in the world and recognized as such.” He has pursued that goal by bringing faculty, students, and alumni together in a community that shares his dedication to world-changing scholarship and outstanding education.
Since Ted became dean in 2001, he has helped recruit many of the world’s leading faculty to Chicago, while almost doubling the number of endowed professorships. Over that period Booth has also enjoyed the highest retention of senior faculty in five decades. At the same time Ted has helped make a Chicago education accessible to more of the most qualified students. Through excellent financial management, scholarship assistance more than tripled during this period.
The school’s global footprint grew significantly during Ted’s tenure, with a planned campus expansion in Singapore, a new campus in London, and a key role in the University’s new Center in China.
Ted helped move the school into a spectacular new facility, the Harper Center, and used that dramatic space last fall to announce the $300 million gift from David Booth and his family. That historic gift grew out of the vision shared by Ted and David of a school that offers still stronger faculty and student support, and a greater global impact.
The election of a faculty search committee for a new dean will take place in coming weeks. As that process gets underway, we hope you will join us in congratulating Ted, celebrating his legacy, and wishing him the best.
