Revels to perform 'The Ballad of Scavenger Gulch' on Jan. 28–29

A beloved Hyde Park tradition will return at 8 p.m. on Jan. 28-29 as faculty and community members will join together for the University of Chicago Revels at the Quadrangle Club. This year's lighthearted musical, "The Ballad of Scavenger Gulch: A Tale of Lost & Found," will feature appearances by Illinois Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie, author Sara Paretsky, Rockefeller Dean Elizabeth Davenport, hematologist/oncologist Philip Hoffman, and renowned Shakespeare scholar David Bevington.

Since 1904, the Revels have given faculty and community members the opportunity to lampoon life on and off the quads. This year is no exception: “The Ballad of Scavenger Gulch” will feature a reclusive artist, a scheming reality show producer and a scavenger hunt. Past topics have included the North Side/South Side rivalry, the magical properties of Botany Pond and Chicago’s mob history.

The Revels have featured appearances by many UChicago luminaries over their 107–year history—among them future Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. In 1949, Robert Maynard Hutchins inaugurated the tradition of presidential cameos in the Revels; in 2007, President Robert J. Zimmer trod the boards alongside President Emerita Hanna Gray and President Emeritus Hugo Sonnenschein.

“The Ballad of Scavenger Gulch” was written by Andy Austin Cohen, with music and lyrics by Julian Harvey, Sara Paretsky, Will C. White and director Noel Taylor. Lorraine Brochu and Nancy Levner produced this year's production.
