Freund's research interests range from string theory to certain mathematical aspects of stock market crashes. He is author of A Passion for Discovery (World Scientific, 2007), a book that recounts stories about many key 20th-century physicists and mathematicians. In these stories, Freund explores how world affairs affect scientists and their interactions. He also writes short stories, several of which have been published in Andrei Codrescu’s online journal Exquisite Corpse. A native of Romania, Freund was among a group of students rounded up and nearly executed by communist authorities in 1956. His honors include elected fellowship to the American Physical Society.
