Shakespeare Faces Retirement
In the film Shakespeare in Love, the romantic adventures of the young Will Shakespeare provide the fledgling playwright with the inspiration for his plays. But how much can we really decipher about the Bard's personal life from his writings? University of Chicago English professor David Bevington compares the scanty historical record with the central concerns of the plays and finds a writer preoccupied with male maturation, love, loss and the uncertain prospect of returning to his wife and family after long absences on the London stage.
