Van Jones: Rebuilding the Dream

In his speech, titled “Rebuild the Dream,” Jones spoke out against the challenges faced by America’s middle class, including foreclosure and substantial student debt. He called on Americans to get more involved in the struggle for social justice, saying, “if we’re waiting for something to change in Washington before we change in this room, we’re going to be waiting for a long time, and we don’t have time.”

Jones discussed his new organization, Rebuild the Dream, which he hopes will bring about economic renewal and revitalize the middle class. Among other recommendations, Jones called for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to reduce principal on “underwater” mortgages. 

Bamuthi’s performance incorporated dance, spoken-word poetry, and music sung by the audience.

During the conversation with Cohen, Jones and Bamuthi discussed the Trayvon Martin case and the role of race in contemporary American society, as well as the Occupy movement and other social issues.
