The University of Chicago's 507th Convocation – Spring 2011
Thousands of students and faculty from across the institution came together on the Main Quadrangle Saturday, June 11 for the 507th Convocation of the University of Chicago. This was the second year for the new, annual University-wide ceremony, which included graduates from the College, the Divisions and the Schools. Separate diploma ceremonies also took place across campus.
As in other years, the 507th Convocation preserved the tradition of a faculty speaker, with David Strauss, the Gerald Ratner Distinguished Service Professor of Law, addressing the graduates and their guests.
In addition, the University presented honorary degrees to four recipients: paleontologist Meemann Chang from Beijing University; former chairman of the University of Chicago Board of Trustees James S. Crown; renowned composer Sofia Gubaidulina; and mathematician Robert Langlands from the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.
