Water Safety Update - Boil order lifted for Hyde Park

The Chicago Department of Water Management has lifted the water boil order that it issued on Saturday, August 29, for an area including most of the University campus and nearby residences in Hyde Park.

The order, which was issued following difficulties with the city's work on a water main along 57th Street, applied to the area south of 56th Street, north of 59th Street, east of Cottage Grove Ave., and west of Dorchester Ave.

Water quality tests completed on Sunday afternoon indicated that water in the affected area is safe to consume. The Department of Water Management gave the following advice for homeowners in the affected area following the lifting of the boil order:

-   Flush all faucets. Run all cold-water faucets for 3 to 5 minutes.

-   Drain and refill hot water tanks.

-   Flush automatic icemakers. Make 3 batches of ice and discard all 3 batches.

-   If you have a water softener, run water through a regeneration cycle.

-   If you have a point of use or inline water filters, sediment and/or Reverse Osmosis systems, perform the recommended filter change or backwash in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

-   Re-start and flush any water-using fixture in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

-   Backwash swimming pool filters, rehabilitation equipment, and similar equipment, and change the media or water.
