The Quadrangle Club Revels will return for its annual musical revue in Any Resemblance: A Revels Selfie, taking place at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30 and 31, at the Quadrangle Club, 1155 E. 57th St.
This year's story line finds a young music teacher, Sue, who has received an unusual inheritance from her colorful Aunt Sarabanda; the Phoenix Revels. With a century-long history and generation of personal politics, she must pull together an eleventh-hour show to combat the winter doldrums, appease the Hyde Park gods and uphold the family tradition of running the show. But what to do for a plot in this amateur production? From the beyond, her aunt laughingly directs, “Don’t worry about a plot. No one pays attention anyway. Do a pastiche.”
An original production by author and courtroom artist Andy Austin, the show will feature University of Chicago faculty members David Bevington, Eric Beyer and Patsy Ann Beyer, joined by alumna Sara Paretsky and other alumni and Hyde Park residents in a Revels redux.
Local actors, including Trip Driscoll, Tom LaRiviere, Lauren Miller and Sara Stern will sing to the music of Prof. Thomas Christensen, Colin DeJong, Ted Fishman (lyrics), George Frideric Handel, Julian Harvey, Carol Saller and Randall West, accompanied by University organist Tom Weisflog. The production team comprises Andy Austin (book, lyrics and co-producer), Laura Nash (director), Carolyn Currie (stage manager), David Pollack (music director), Philip Matsikas (scenery), Joy Nieda and Lorraine Brochu (co-producers.
Tickets are $30 (students $10). A special dinner-and-show package is available at the Quadrangle Club on Friday for $60 and on Saturday for $70.
