The University of Chicago football team captured the University Athletic Association championship on Saturday with a 13-10 win over Washington (Mo.) University at Stagg Field.
Quarterback Marshall Oium’s 10-yard pass to Dee Brizzolara just before halftime was the Maroons’ lone touchdown. Jeff Sauer’s 27-yard field goal with 4:04 left in the third quarter broke a 10-all tie and provided the winning margin.
At 8-2, Chicago claimed its fourth UAA title — and first since 2005 — and earned the most wins in a season since 1995.
The Maroons were in strong contention for one of three NCAA Division III at-large playoff berths, but found out Sunday afternoon that it was not selected for the 32-team field.
Lawton leads women’s cross country to NCAAs
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Senior Liz Lawton took top individual honors Saturday as the Maroons women’s cross country team finished fifth at the 38-team Midwest Regional Championship at Augustana College.
UChicago received one of 16 at-large selections to participate in the NCAA Division III Championship, to be held Saturday, Nov. 20 at Wartburg College.
The Maroons will make their sixth appearance in the NCAA championships and first since 2006.
Men’s cross country finishes 10th at regionals
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Led by sophomore Billy Whitmore, the UChicago men's cross country team finished 10th Saturday at the 39-team Midwest Regional Championship at Augustana College.
Whitmore finished in 31st place on the 8-kilometer course with a time of 24:50.
Women’s soccer falls in first round
DUBUQUE, Iowa — The UChicago women’s soccer team played to a scoreless tie Friday in the opening round of the Division III championship before losing to Wartburg College in a penalty kick shootout.
Wartburg’s Monica Noti made eight saves in regulation and led the Knights to a 4-3 shootout win.
The Maroons finished the year 12-4-3, having earned its first UAA championship in 11 years.
Volleyball team loses NCAA debut; Smalls honored
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Maroons volleyball team fell to No. 6 Hope College in three sets in Thursday’s opening round of the Division III volleyball championship at Wittenberg University.
Junior outside hitter Isis Smalls had eight kills to lead UChicago (30-14), which was making its first NCAA tournament appearance.
On Nov. 12, Smalls was selected to the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Midwest Region Team. Smalls had a school-record 490 kills for the season and became the Maroons' all-time leader in that category with 1,251.
