The College at the University of Chicago has launched the Chicago Careers in Public and Social Service, a new program designed to guide students interested in careers in the government and non-profit sectors.
To celebrate the launch, Alderman Toni Preckwinkle spoke Wednesday, April 21, at the School of Social Service Administration. Currently serving her fifth term as the alderman of Chicago's 4th Ward, which includes portions of Hyde Park, Preckwinkle is an alumna of the University of Chicago, AB'69, MAT'77. A longtime advocate for affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization, Preckwinkle is running for Cook County Board president.
The new Public and Social Service program is sponsored by the College and offered through the University's Career Advising and Planning Services to respond to both student interest in careers in these areas and to connect students with the numerous opportunities available within the government and with non-profits worldwide.
"What's particularly encouraging is both the increasing number of students interested in careers in public and social service and the growing number of opportunities available in these sectors," said Dillan Siegler, Program Director, Chicago Careers In Public and Social Service.
